CnCNet Organisation

CnCNet has been around since 2009, and began with the earlier Command & Conquer titles of Tiberian Dawn and Red Alert. Over time, more modern titles were added with the most popular being Red Alert 2 and its expansion Yuri's Revenge.

I joined in 2014, being excited to learn Red Alert was still alive and thriving. I hadn't played since 1999! Users were separated by hammers, a monkey, a crown and gold medals, which I learnt represented admin and pro players. The monkey and crown will likely remain a mystery, with only my predecessor knowing their reason. So as far as I was aware, we had the following user levels:

  • Hammers - Admin
  • Monkey - Fluffy
  • Crown - Photon
  • Gold Medals - Pro players

Whilst the monkey remains, the crown has vanished. Come to think of it, there might be some code which brings the crown back, I'll have a look...

Anyway, this was how I and the vast majority of RA players viewed CnCNet with Funky in charge and doing all the coding. How wrong we all were! For those who stumbled upon the about button, you would note that CnCNet is significantly larger:

But this only reveals a small portion of our now vast organisation, which is centred within discord having moved from the forums. The roles are:

  • Admin - in charge of policy and resources
  • Game Maintainer - in charge of maintaining and developing specific games
  • Staff - day to day management
  • Moderator - discord moderation
  • Game Admin - moderation and development
  • Wizard/Bounty Hunter - assistants
  • Shadow realm - anonymous members
Whilst he no longer holds a directing role, Myg is responsible for founding CnCNet per his interview with Crush.

Red Alert is operated on CnCNet5, a game client made by HiFi (Backend) and FunkyFr3sh (Frontend). But if you download some of the newer games at CnCNet, you will be given a different version called CnCNet4. The plan was to move all games to CnCNet5, however, Red Alert 2 never made it over and it was preferred to remain on CnCNet4 for its better modding capability. Read more here:

I took over from Funky as Red Alert's Game Maintainer in 2021, and the only Game Admin still active. Whilst I have some coding experience, I'm not a full time developer so began looking for others within the game who could help. I found 3 excellent devs (and great players), however, none were keen enough.

Tiberian Sun has now been moved over to CnCNet4, and the plan is to move Red Alert over next. I will kick this task off, but would appreciate help from any experienced coders. The move will house all games under the same roof, and allow for some interesting upgrades to the user experience.

CnCNet is a team of volunteers, some of whom are paid for their work at open collective via donations. As a meritocracy, members are also rewarded for their work with responsibilities. I am currently looking for people to join our RA team:

Red Alert Team
